PE Family of Schools

Otley, Pool and Bramhope Cluster

Our Vision

We hope that, through all the sporting opportunities and physical activity we offer, the children will potentially develop a love and passion for sport and continue this into their Secondary schools and later lives.

All schools within the Family aim to provide our children with at least 2 hours of fun, exciting and active PE lessons every week and to keep the children healthy and active every day with at least 30 minutes of physical activity a day and by educating them on a healthy, balanced diet and lifestyle.

Within the Family, we also strive to give as many children as possible the opportunity to compete in a variety of competitions, during school time or by representing the school at local events within Leeds and at Prince Henry’s Grammar School. We hope that in doing so the children will develop greater confidence, team work and learn to win or lose with grace and sportsmanship.

It is also of paramount importance that we create sporting leaders within our schools and PHGS. We aim to offer lots of children the opportunity to lead sporting activities, organise games and events and learn to lead by example. By emphasising leadership, we hope the children learn the importance of communication, organisation, team work, resilience, perseverance and respect for rules.

PE and Sport are a proud part of our Family of Schools and we hope that this continues to grow in the future and prepare our children for their future lives.

Purpose of study

A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. It should provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.

Aims

The national curriculum for physical education aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
  • are physically active for sustained periods of time
  • engage in competitive sports and activities
  • lead healthy, active lives.
IMPLEMENTATION

There are 2 hours of timetabled lessons each week for every pupil in KS1 and KS2, allowing pupils to develop themselves as a whole person, build a sound knowledge of basic skills, develop the values of the school’s vision and to build a positive relationship with physical health. We use REAL PE to ensure that all lessons provide continuity and progression allowing pupils to flourish and develop a range of skills. This scheme was chosen as it fits to our schools ethos of developing the whole pupil; exploring personal, social, creative, cognitive and health and fitness skills.

Hall space and outside space are timetabled in order to give each class an opportunity to access PE lessons and we use Chippendale Leisure Centre to enable our pupils to access the Swimming aspects of the National Curriculum.

Lessons are planned to cover the National Curriculum, considering the importance of both the breadth and depth of learning. Throughout the academic year, the allocated 2 hours curriculum time is split between the class teacher and specialist PE teacher who demonstrates high quality Physical Education as part of our schools drive for Continuing Professional Development.

IMPACT

Experience in PE should provide a depth of learning in a positive and engaging environment. Basic underlying principles and skills will have been practised and opportunities to develop these into more complex processes. Pupils will be confident to try new things and take risks. They will be able to make quick decisions and choices when planning tasks or performances. They will have a range of strategies for solving problems and show resilience to keep going when they find things difficult. Pupils will understand the benefits of working in different group dynamics. They will have the confidence to lead and support others. They will understand the importance of physical activity in a wider context and possess the skills and enthusiasm to develop their learning further.

We use a range of strategies to assess what skills and knowledge the children have attained each term including the following:

  • Videos and photos of lessons
  • Pupil Voice
  • Regular feedback each lesson
