Some Information about our backgrounds:
David Drake

David Drake has been a school governor since 2019, and is in second year as Chair of Governors and prior to that as Vice Chair. David is sits on the schools resources committee. David has three children attending the school.
In his professional life, David is a Senior Associate Director at an international consultancy firm where specialises in buildings, infrastructure, assurance, and business operations and management.
Kelly Hendley
Vice Chair of Governors; Co-opted, Pupil Support Committee Member
I am the mum of Thomas, William & Annabel who have all attended or are still attending The Whartons. I am married to Ben and we live in Otley. I love the area and can’t imagine leaving.
I am a solicitor working for a large multinational health organisation, and I specialise in health and social care law. I am experienced in safeguarding and act as the child safeguarding and protection lead for the organisation in the UK. Outside of work, I enjoy playing netball and spending time outdoors with my children.
I love the idea of contributing to the continued improvement of The Whartons, and would welcome the opportunity to become more involved with the school.
Alan Padden
Co-opted Governor
I offered my services as a Governor six years ago when my granddaughter was admitted to the school. She is now in Year 5 and my grandson is in Year 3.
I retired in 2006 having served as Headteacher of Adel Primary School having previously serving as Headteacher of Hillside Middle School in Leeds. Prior to that I had served as Deputy Headteacher at Otley Weston Lane Middle School for ten years including one year as Acting Headteacher, Head of Maths at Broad Lane Middle School in Leeds having started my career at St Benedicts RC Secondary School where I was promoted to Second in the Mathematics Department and Head of Year 10 and 11 serving on the Senior Management Committee.
I qualified as an Additional Ofsted Inspector and inspected schools in Wakefield, Kirklees, Derbyshire, the East Riding of Yorkshire and Birmingham. Prior to my retirement I qualified as a Schools Improvement Advisor. I was elected as Vice Chair of Leeds Primary Headteachers Association and was involved in negotiations with Leeds City Council and Education Leeds represents the Headteachers of 220 Leeds Schools.
I offered my experience, knowledge and skills to support an already very good school led by an excellent Headteacher and an extremely professional staff to enable the children to reach their full potential supported by a hard working Governing Body. I served for two years as Chair of that Governing Body, during which time the school was inspected by Ofsted and was deemed to be a 'good' school, a judgement I considered undervalued the many strengths the school possesses, particularly the Teaching and Learning which are outstanding.
Naomi Bacon

Naomi Bacon has been a Governor since 2019 and sits on the Pupil Support Committee. Naomi is also the named Governor for Safeguarding. Naomi lives in Otley and her three children attend the Whartons. Naomi works as a GP in North Yorkshire and a Medical Examiner at Airedale Hospital. Within these roles Naomi is very involved in training junior doctors and teaching medical students. Christine’s own children attended The Whartons (many years ago!) and she recognises what an important role the school plays in the local community.
James Armstrong
Co-opted Governor
I have served as a Co-opted Governor at The Whartons Primary School since 2022. My professional background is in Higher Education, where I have held various administrative roles before transitioning into Business & Enterprise. In this capacity, I worked closely with the education sector, collaborating with senior leaders, governors, local authorities, the Department for Education (DfE), and multi-academy trusts. My focus has been on delivering resources and training in key areas such as mental health support in schools, anti-racism, supervision, and coaching.
Currently, I am the Contracts & Business Manager at the National Centre for Atmospheric Science, where I support the delivery of large-scale scientific research and infrastructure projects.
I have been continually impressed by the dedication of the school's staff and the enthusiasm of its pupils. As a member of the Teaching & Learning sub-committee, I look forward to continuing my role on the Governing Board, contributing to the ongoing success and development of the school.
